Is watermarking a worthwhile topic of research? To answer this, we need to ask whether watermarking is leading to interesting problems in basic research and whether engineering progress is leading to practical solutions. Work in these areas is still in its infancy. However, it is expected that security will not become an issue. Rather, robustness, fidelity and payload requirements are the key issues and we believe that these requirements can or will be met.
